HR Indaba Africa 2018: Setsmol helps people understand property ownership

post-title

Setsmol helps employees overcome over-indebtednes and teaches them about credit literacy.

In the coming weeks and months, we will be chatting to all the HR Indaba partners, asking them why they are excited about the event and what they believe are the most important issues facing the profession. In this article, we speak to Setsmol director Solly Molefe Sechoaro.

What is Setsmol, how long has it been around and what was the reason for starting the company?

SetsMol is a South African property and financial wellness company, which was conceived out of the observation that most people in post-apartheid South Africa lack knowledge regarding matters of finance and housing/property ownership.

We did our research and found that the rights, contractual obligations, accountability and responsibilities of prospective property owners are often not adequately explained in a way that would demystify the whole scenario, thus resulting in flagrant defaults/repossessions.

We found that HR want to find solutions to better engage with employees but are unwilling to delve into the realm of personal financial challenges, which is the one the biggest reasons for absenteeism and employee turnover.

How do you differentiate yourselves from other learning and development companies

We have extensive specialised skills and international academic expertise garnered over the last 16 years. We aim to find solutions for people around the current and future challenges to financial wellness, providing tailor-made capacity-building programmes for individuals and organisations alike. Among the many things that our participants learn, for example, is how credit scores are derived, while they are also provided with creative specific strategies to improve their credit profiles. We are also accredited by the Construction Education and Training Authority and National Credit Regulator.

3. Why have you signed up for the HR Indaba and what should attendees look forward to seeing from you at the event?

We believe HR Indaba is one of the best platforms on which we can market ourselves as it represents an opportunity to engage with a significant number of HR personnel.

4. What would you say is the biggest challenge facing the HR profession?

The HR profession has to evolve to become more focused on employee engagement instead of viewing workers people who are there to do a job. It should approach employees as individuals and try to assist them with the personal challenges they face, including over-indebtedness and lack of housing.
